Amish Hamburger Steak Bake
A hearty, comforting casserole inspired by traditional Amish home cooking — simple ingredients, rich flavor, and perfect for family dinners.
🛒 Ingredients
1½ lbs ground beef
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup milk
1 cup sour cream
1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
3 cups thinly sliced potatoes
1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 tbsp butter (for greasing dish)
Optional: ½ tsp paprika or dried parsley for garnish
👩‍🍳 Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
Prepare beef mixture:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef, onion, and garlic until beef is browned. Drain excess grease. Season with salt and pepper.
Mix sauce:
In a bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, milk, and sour cream. Stir until smooth.
Layer the casserole:
Spread half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish.
Add half of the cooked beef mixture.
Pour half of the sauce over the layer.
Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, and sauce.
Bake covered with foil for 60 minutes.
Add cheese:
Remove foil, sprinkle cheddar cheese on top, and bake uncovered for another 15–20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly.
Rest & serve:
Let sit 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with paprika or parsley if desired.

Serve with buttered green beans or a simple garden salad.
Fresh homemade bread makes it even better.
